Jeppe Hein’s fountain Southbank: People watching

Jeppe Hein’s Appearing Room Fountain, Southbank Centre

On Thursday evening I was out for drinks with friends, so I deliberately left my camera at home.  By chance we found a ring side seat near this popular summer fountain on London’s Southbank.

I had no intention of taking any photos but as we sat there, chatting, my eyes kept being drawn to the people enjoying themselves in the fountain.  I only had my phone on me and the camera has a very slow response.  So I clicked and hoped for the best. I knew the definition would be mediocre but from first few shots, the patterns and changing light made for interesting compositions.  And I was really excited to see the results.

In this final image, the young woman was alone, filming herself with her phone.  Most people filmed themselves.  I like the grainy results which are more like paintings.  I hope you’ve enjoyed them.  One of my pals said as we left, “now you know never to leave home without your camera.”
